An overview of Con Minh - Hanoi - Haiphong Economic Corridor
Con Minh - Hanoi - Hai Phong Economic Corridor, one of the five economic corridors of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS ) and one of the three north - south economic corridors of GMS, was formed on the basis of initiatives of the Asian Development Bank( ADB) and has been launched since 1998. Simultaneously, It is a part of the cooperation program “Two Corridors and One Ring " between China and Vietnam. In this program, known by a longer name, Economic Corridor is Con Minh – Lao Cai- Hanoi - Hai Phong – Quang Ninh one(formerly just called Con Minh - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong Economic Corridor). This is an development approach in the adjacent geographic areas taking the traffic axises as the foundation to connect the regions with aim of building a open geospace - a cooperation framework in the direction of maximizing the advantages and effectiveness in socio- economic development and minimizing costs.
Con Minh - Hai Phong Economic Corridor, which has the shortest corridor and the large and medium cites the most, was developed on the basis of available transport routes between Yunnan ( China ) and the northern provinces and cities of Vietnam. There are many forms of traffic in this corridor route, including road, railway and waterway and road. Railroad bases on the route built in the early 20th century by French colonialism. Waterway bases on Red River and Thai Binh River system. Roads based on Con Minh - Hekou freeway route in Yunnan territory , the Lao Cai – Hanoi freeway( under construction), Highway 5, the Noi Bai - Ha Long freeway in the territory of Vietnam
The scope of this economic corridor spans 4 cities, autonomous mountain districts of Yunnan and 9 provinces in the northern of Vietnam with the total area of 130,049km2, the population of 26,944 million. In that, Yunnan province of China consists of 4 administrative units: Con Minh city, Yuxi City, Hong Ha district, Van Son district with an area of 101.100km2, the population of 14,494 million, and 16 ethnic groups. The Vietnam consists of 9 provinces and cities with an area of 29,049km2, the population of 12,5 million from 26 peoples.
