Discovering Cu Vai village - A village floating above the sea of clouds
LCP - Located in Hanh Phuc commune, Lao Cai province, Cu Vai village is emerging as an attractive destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Sitting at an elevation of over 1,000 meters above sea level, it is often described as an “island in the clouds,” blanketed year-round by layers of drifting white mist that create a magical, poetic landscape.
Perched atop a high mountain and isolated from the outside world, Cu Vai is enveloped in fog throughout the year. In the Thai language, “Cu Vai” means “a band of clouds stretching across the sky,” a name that perfectly captures the village’s unique charm. Nestled amid majestic mountains and forests, the village exudes a sense of tranquility and dreamlike beauty.
The journey to Cu Vai is an adventure in itself. The roughly 7-kilometer route, partly paved, winds along steep mountain slopes. Along the way, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of golden terraced rice fields during harvest season, interspersed with the bright yellow of wild sunflowers and stretches of purple wildflowers cascading down the hillsides. The higher you go, the more enchanting the scenery becomes - like entering a “flower paradise” among the clouds.

Cu Vai is home mainly to the Mong ethnic community. Their simple houses clustered on the mountaintop create a striking image of a “village suspended in the sky.” Life here remains deeply traditional, from housing architecture to cultural practices. The villagers’ sincerity and hospitality leave lasting impressions on visitors.

What makes Cu Vai truly remarkable is its pristine natural beauty and the experience of “cloud hunting”. In the early morning, thick clouds blanket the entire village, creating a surreal, fairy-tale-like atmosphere. From this vantage point, visitors can gaze out over an endless sea of clouds and layers of rolling mountains.
Each season brings a distinct beauty to Cu Vai. From September to October, the golden rice harvest attracts many tourists and photographers. From November to March, it becomes an ideal time for cloud hunting, when dense clouds drift beneath your feet. Especially from December to January, peach blossoms bloom across the village, painting the solitary mountain road in shades of pink and creating a rare romantic scene.

Beyond its spectacular landscapes, Cu Vai also offers authentic local experiences. Visitors can stroll through the village, explore the daily life of the Mong people, listen to the sound of the traditional khen echoing through the mountains, or enjoy a cup of hot tea in a peaceful setting. The innocent smiles of children and the warmth of the locals make this place feel welcoming and intimate.

At present, Cu Vai village still retains its untouched, unspoiled charm and has not yet been heavily developed for tourism. With its stunning scenery and rich cultural identity, it holds great potential for eco-tourism, community-based tourism, and experiential activities such as trekking, exploration, and cloud hunting.
